Saint Therese of Lisieux became my favorite saint after I read her autobiography, seeing her genuine, affectionate love for God, her family, and her friends.
I went on pilgrimage to visit her hometown of Lisieux, France and other places in Italy she mentions visiting in her autobiography, The Story of a Soul (Audible Audiobook). There are pictures of my pilgrimage in the slideshow.
In English-speaking countries she is often known as “The Little Flower,” due to her comparisons of herself to a little flower, growing by the grace of God, to be plucked for Jesus’ enjoyment.
In France she is known as “La Petite Therese,” because of the “little way” of faith she taught.
Her religious name is Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, due to her devotion to Jesus as a little child and the face of Christ, particularly during his Passion.
Her baptismal name was Marie Françoise-Thérèse Martin and she always went by “Therese” with her family.
She was proclaimed the 33rd Doctor of the Church, a most prestigious title within the Catholic church — a title only held by four women to date.
