The Very Best Podcasts and Books!

YouTube

The Bible Project by Tim Mackie. Videos on every book of the Bible. Beautifully illustrated videos on various Biblical themes and books of the Bible. A truly impressive resource.

Religion for Breakfast by Dr. Andrew M. Henry. Videos from a nuanced, academic perspective on popular and niche subjects regarding religion, including early Christianity and Gnosticism.

I also greatly appreciate Truth Unites for an educated Protestant perspective and How to Be Christian for some entertaining Catholic apologetics. For a more scholarly perspective, Dan McClellan is an excellent bible scholar who’s got a lot on YouTube (slogan: “data over dogma”).

Jonathan Pageau, Orthodox icon carver, has some incredible stuff on Biblical symbolism and symbolic thought in general. He has a podcast as well called The Symbolic World (website).

Jordan Peterson has some incredible Biblical Lectures (YouTube series), and his seminars on Exodus and The Gospels are also phenomenal, with some clips on YouTube, though the full seminars are paywalled. His podcast (website) has plenty of content regarding Biblical narrative.

**Note** My recommendation of resources is not an indication that I personally “agree” with all of the content. But I do have a great love and appreciation for every one of these perspectives, and believe when taken together, can be very edifying, especially when internalized within a life of personal devotion and communal feedback.

Books

CS Lewis

Ah! What an incredible author. His book 📕Mere Christianity is an excellent introduction to Christianity. 📕The Screwtape Letters is a practically helpful take on what what demons might be like. And 📕The Great Divorce provides a helpful analogy for the afterlife.

Henri Nouwen

Nouwen is lovely to read for exploring the mystical side of faith. His book, 📕The Way of the Heart was a big help to me in discovering the value of silence and solitude in one’s relationship with Christ.

Erich Fromm

Fromm is an incredible thinker, and his insight into spiritual concepts incorporates much Christian thought, though he himself is not so much Christian as what he describes as approximating “nontheistic mysticism.” 📕The Art of Loving is gold! And he is prolific.

Brian D, McLaren

McLaren helped me to reconcile the goodness I had been discovering in a variety of different Christian traditions. He is very well known for the book 📕A Generous Orthodoxy and I found great synthesis and resonance with his book 📕A New Kind of Christianity.

Therese of Lisieux

Therese has had a huge impact on how I relate with Jesus, with the Church, and suffering. In many ways I related with her, and found myself drawn in and inspired by her genuine affection and authentic self-sacrifice. Even though she died at 24 years old, she has had an enormous impact on Christendom, inspiring many with her autobiography, 📕The Story of a Soul, and with all her extant writings: her letters, poems, and plays.

Other authors who have been influential for me include NT Write (especially 📕Surprised by Joy to understand the resurrection of the dead), and several saints, such as St Bonaventure, St John of the Cross, and St Theresa of Avila. And of course Paul the Apostle and John the Beloved, who’s attributed works are foundational for all the other authors here!
